Kara Flare-a?

Kara stopped over for a visit and we did an impromptu shoot. She had this awesome vintage dress and  her hair looked great! The set-up was simple. Just a hot-light positioned high behind her. No modifiers at all. Metered at around 800 iso. Shot with a 70-200 2.8 with no hood (to get lens flare) at 70mm f/2.8. The photoshop was minimal. Just a little desaturation. I love the look of these flared photos. I has a soft and angelic look that I've kinda been into lately. I guess all it takes is an amazing model, a camera, and to not over think the techinical.

Been awhile.

It's been some time since I last posted. Apologies. I've ben busy doing video for a client. Low production stuff but still very fun! The work is mostly for PR. Currently in production is the first in a series of 'how-to' videos. It's been very fun. The client has a great team helping out and we're all putting a lot of thought into this new series. Wish us luck!

Katia in the Apartment.

 

  Tonight I shot Katia for my One-A-Day project (1/4/08). She brought some great wardrobe and ideas.  We did one shot with a ringflash and a fan. What an awesome 'go-to' for fashion stuff! Sooo not original. But rad nonetheless. You cannot argue with a good photograph. The second shot was our 'Korean war USO gal' glamour shot. I love it. It was lit with 3 cheap hot lights (basically light bulbs mounted in mixing bowls). One was a rim, another was a main, then the third was fill (from the same side as the main) with some diffusion over it. Trying out these simple lights and set-ups are awesome. It's so rad to move away from conventional/contemporary lighting and go with a 'golden age' camera club style. In post I desaturated the image a bit then added a color balance adjustment layer pumping up the yellows and reds to give it an 'aged color photograph' look.

Mad Maddi

  For the 'One A Day' shoot (1/3/08 for those keeping score), Maddi C. came over so we shoot something quickly at my place. Very simple set-up. Rock on the hi-fi, ringflash, and a fan. She arrived 'camera ready' and we just went to it. I love this image. Very direct and hotly confrontational. She's also a character so we had a blast!

Somewhere in Time

  Hi, this is Tara, the model in the picture, and it was awesome working on this shoot with Carl.  I was excited to know that he wanted to do part of our shoot with 4 X 5 Poloroids.  Carl brought in his 4 X 5 film camera for the shoot.  First, he had to focus the shot which meant that I had to hold completely still for 2 seconds in order to avoid blurring of the photo.  This was a little difficult to do and avoid looking stiff, but somehow it all came together.  He also used an old hot light with diffusion and black wrap.  The end result was numerous photos that each had its own unique and timeless quality.

It was great working with Carl because he let me work my own poses but also offered guidance when he had an idea--usually an extension of something I had thought of but sometimes wasn't quite there.  I liked the fact that I could have this freedom of creativity and expression in the poses but also had his advice from his perspective of being behind the camera.  Because we could work together in this way, I feel it greatly contributed to us achieving excellent shots.

EJ

  EJ is up from LA visiting her family for the holidays. We shot last night. Awesome and fun! Madeline did make-up. Sorry, only posting one photograph for now due to 'lack of time'. EJ rocked it! Love you!

This is, to me, a great example of how it takes nothing but everything to make a good photo. Phenomenal model, excellent Make-up artist, monkey with a camera, and a scarf. Simply lit with an extra small chimera and a 'nothing else'. B&W was done with a Channel mixer layer (red at maybe zero and pumping the blue at maybe 75 and green at maybe 25).

Hope all is well with you, I'm a pinch pre-occupied with the guitar at the moment but, I had to take a break and do a post.

This is what we did.

This is that we shot the next night with the view camera. I used the tilts of the camera to only focus on the face and the shoes. All lit with that SV 'work light'. The first shot was a 2 second exposure and Katie held still (awesome!). The other 2 were around 1/4-1/2 second exposures. Really fun stuff! The only drawback is the each sheet of Polaroid 55 film costs $5.00! It's a more cost effective shot if you use a good model. Katie you rock!

Out of the closet!

Katie - A super quick test with a 4x5 view camera.

  Last Thursday my friend Katie stopped by to show me her new hair color. She darkened her blonde locks and Madeline of Sylvie's did and awesome job. We were discussing doing some new photos for Katie's book when I got all geeky and busted out an old 4x5 that I haven't used in years. She'd never seen one in use. It was pretty cool because, after I told her,  she really understood the slow process of it. Pose, focus, don't move, set the lens, don't move, load the Polaroid back into the camera, DON'T MOVE, shoot!

  I used a Cambo 45 with a Nikkor-W 210mm. We shot Polaroid Type 55. I lit her with an old Smith-Victor light (250watt bulb) that I have never used for more than a work light. The exposure was wide-open at 5.6 and I think it was 1/4 second.

  It was fun to shoot slow. No 2k hot lights, no strobes, no sun, no digital (except I copy shot the roids instead of scanning). Just a camera, a 'work light', and a 'this will be cool, I promise' attitude. Playing the game with different rules again. Raw and unpolished. Like, back before photography became a business for me. 19 again. Now I have a Bryan Adams song stuck in my head!

  Welcome to my blog. I guess I've joined the fray. My plans with this is to share my experiences in my photography with all of you. Show some photographs, discuss how they were done, and talk about photography in general.

  Photography is my passion and I feel fortunate to have discovered it early in my life. It's what I've done since I was 19. This will give me the forum to share this passion with anyone who will listen. Actually it's more of an outlet for me when there is no one here to listen.

I look forward to this adventure! I hope people reply to posts and open up dialogues for discussion.
